There are already predictions that in the future hormone replacement for men will be as widespread as hormone replacement for women. Most men seem unaware that the problems commonly experienced by men in mid life: weight gain, depression, diminishment of sex drive and performance, diminishment of energy and zest, irritability, trouble concentrating and remembering, lesser muscle strength, higher cholesterol, and so on, are the result of ever-increasing hormone deficiencies. Instead of seeking help, many men simply suffer in silence, assuming it's "just aging". And "aging" is assumed to be synonymous with "normal".

The average MD still believes in the old myths about the dangers of testosterone, totally ignorant about the beneficial impact of testosterone on cellular energy production, brain function, oxygenation, insulin sensitivity, and yes, cholesterol. Yet, testosterone replacement (mostly by injection) has been practiced for more than fifty years. It is only now, however, that it is merely beginning to be respectable. We have controlled studies that clearly show cardiovascular, cognitive and other benefits when an aging man is given supplemental testosterone whether by injection, patch, cream, gel, or sublingual tablet.

There are more and more studies showing the important role of DHEA and testosterone (and possibly progesterone) in the prevention of brain diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's and simply maintaining mental vigor. DHEA levels have been found to be correlated with potency more strongly than testosterone levels. Dr. William Regelson, one of the chief popularizers of the need for hormone replacement for men, emphasizes that the strongest evidence is that DHEA protects against stress-related injury.

For more information on hormones for men we recommend reading "A Quick Reference Guide To Natural Human Hormones For Men" by Ivy Greenwell.
